Year 1 update on Autumn 2

Year 1 update on Autumn 2

We have had a great half term with so many different learning activities. We have been learning all about toys. In our topic Toys, we looked at toys from the past and how they are different from the toys we have today.  Thank you to all the parents that shared their toy memories to help the children understand that toys have changed over time.

In English we have been reading the story Traction Man which is a story about a toy that goes on amazing adventures.  From our reading we re-told parts of the story and even wrote our own adventure story.  We also felt sorry for Traction man because he was the only character in the book who did not have a Christmas stocking.  That inspired us to design and make our own Christmas stocking.  We have been amazed at the high level of work the children have produced.  They created festive stockings that would look great on any mantle piece.

To round up our topic we looked at toys and games children play around the world.  We learnt to play a game called 5 Stones that children play in Asia and an African board game that asks you to guess which hand is holding a stone.

In maths, we learnt more about numbers and how numbers can be partitioned into tens and ones.  We also looked at shapes and learnt how to name and describe them. In science, we started to learn about materials that make everyday objects.  We also learnt how to describe them.  Within our topic we tested if materials were waterproof and used our new knowledge to pick the best materials for traction man’s car.

We wish every body a safe and happy holiday.  We also hope you all take the opportunity to watch each class perform their Christmas show.

Merry Christmas from the Year 1 team
