Year 2 - 1st half of Spring Term

Year 2 - 1st half of Spring Term

What an unexpected half term this has been!   With the school closed to all children except the keyworker and vulnerable children, we quickly made the move back to online learning.  Thank you for all your hard work in supporting your child with their learning.  You have done an incredible job!

Our topic this half term was Florence Nightingale who was alive during a period of history known as the Victorian era, over 150 years ago during the 19th century. The children began by finding the modern day equivalent of different Victorian artefacts in their house.

After finding out about Florence Nightingale the children were introduced to Mary Seacole and had to make the difficult decision of who they would have awarded the Victoria Cross to if they had been a soldier in the Crimean War.

In maths the children have developed their knowledge about 2D and 3D shapes and we really enjoyed their ‘Guess My Shape’ clues which were sent to us in photos and videos.

We also covered fractions of a shape and number, and division.

To help us with our writing we have read ‘Look Up’ and ‘Flat Stanley’.  The children wrote a character description about their favourite book character and we were so impressed by their introductions, paragraphs about appearance and personality and conclusions.

The half term began with Science Day and we all now know which product in our house makes the most bubbles!

Thank you for taking part in all the experiments about germs, exercise and teeth and sharing your results.  The children are confident at explaining what human need to stay alive and healthy.

The snow gave the children the perfect opportunity to practise their underarm and over arm throwing skills and the children have combined their art skills with their computing skills by learning about a different artist each week and learning new skills to recreate each style on the computer or other device they have at home.

We have really enjoyed seeing our classes at the live sessions and receiving all your child’s work.  We hope everyone has a relaxing, safe half term and we will see you back online on the 22nd February at 9.30am.
