PSHE Whole School Values (Behaviour for Learning)

Our school vision and ethos is strongly supported through and embedded in the delivery of our PSHE (personal, social and health education) whole school approach (behaviour for learning) curriculum. At our school we are committed to ensuring that the emotional and social needs of all our children are met within our school environment and support the development of children’s health and wellbeing, self esteem and confidence.

As part of providing a broad and balanced PSHE curriculum through our agreed PSHE whole school approach we are able to nurture and support the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development in young children and promote the fundamental British Values in young lives. We support children to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives and become responsible citizens. We recognise that our school vision is crucial to this learning and should be at the heart of whole school development.

At Burlington we follow and promote 6 core values: friendship, inspiration, determination, excellence, flourish and transitions. We promote these themes through our teaching and learning from Nursery through to Year 2.

Through these themes we aim to support children to:

Planning, Teaching and Learning

Each half term is dedicated to following a specific theme and within that theme specific skills are taught and covered. This approach has been devised in such a way that the learning skills for each year group are progressive and age appropriate. The teaching and delivering of our PSHE programme ensures that teachers provide learning opportunities matched to the individual needs of children including those with additional needs and with English as an additional language.

Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception)

Alongside the whole school programme we teach PSHE in Nursery and Reception as an integral part of the Early Years curriculum, using the Development Matters as guidance and objectives set out in the Early Years Profile. Class teachers are responsible for teaching and delivering quality weekly sessions which include well-planned circle time sessions. Circle time sessions are carefully planned and include a wide range of strategies and resources to engage children e.g. role play and puppets.

Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and Year 2)

In Key Stage 1 teachers plan and deliver quality weekly circle time sessions to cover all aspects of emotional wellbeing. Circle time sessions are carefully planned and include a wide range of strategies and resources to engage children e.g. role play and puppets.

As a school our aim is to embed PSHE in every aspect of school life and PSHE is delivered through a range of whole school activities including:

  • Golden responsibilities
  • Top Table
  • Playground buddies
  • Special weeks e.g. Around the world week, Healthy living week
  • RE days
  • School council, Eco council

  • Celebrating significant days e.g. Remembrance Day
  • Visitors to school e.g. Local Fire Service, Earth song 


Bringing PSHE to life

Last half term we focused on pride, personal success and rising to challenges. Year 1 looked at the book ‘How to catch a star’ and talked about how the main character was successful:

He persevered, he waited and waited for the star

The children thought of a time when they were successful:

I’m successful because first I didn’t know how to play chess and now I know how to do it really well

I practised my handwriting

When I was playing chess with my Dad I did a checkmate

Year 1 also wrote their successful moments down on rosettes and stuck them to their class Cup.

Year 2 learnt about success through circle time games and talked about times that they were successful.

I was a success when my team won at football

Every week,  the School Meals Supervisory assistants nominate one child from each Key Stage 1 class to sit with Mrs Yay-Walker and eat their lunch on Top Table. The children are nominated as a reward and thank you for making good, kind and helpful choices through the lunchtime period. 

We celebrate kindness and being caring throughout our school. Some classes have a kindness board:

Every week the children have Celebration Assembly. During this assembly, children that have made good choices are celebrated and thanked for the things that they have done. The children have their photo taken and their good choice annotated below the printed image. The children stand up in assembly and talk about the lovely thing that they have done. Their photo goes on The Good Deed Board and stays there for the whole year. Children and adults tell Mrs Docwra about the kind things that they have seen so that she can take the photos.

Here are some examples of good deeds. This little girl helped her friend to change out of his P.E kit.

These children in Year 2 played together so well on our playground.

As we were awarded the ‘Bronze Healthy School Award’ last year we have been continuing to promote our healthy school status. We have been learning specifically how to look after our teeth. The School Health Team came to talk to us in assembly. We learnt about food and drinks that are healthy for our teeth and body, and how to look after our teeth by brushing twice a day.

We looked at some ideas for healthy lunchboxes. Then we had a competition in our classes to design the contents of a healthy lunchbox. A special well done to the children who won a Smiggle lunchbox to put their healthy lunch in. Also well done to the runners up who won a light up Paw Patrol toothbrush! Thank you to everyone who took part. You all worked so hard!

We also held a healthy eating competition with the school caterers. The competition was called ‘veg power’ and the children tried a new vegetable each week. Congratulations to Venus class who won the prize!

We also recently hosted 'Around the World Week'. The children had a fantastic week learning about and celebrating countries from all around the world. The highlights of the week were the Don Rae dance sessions, Earthsong music and the dress up day. What amazing outfits the children were wearing, such beautiful colours and patterns. It was a really wonderful and enriching experience for us all. 


Also Year 2 children have taken part in scooter training to promote scooter safety on the roads. The children received a basic introduction to the Green Cross Code, practised pavement ettiquette and learnt how to negotiate driveways when scooting on the payment. It was also lots of fun and great exercise! 

Coming soon, we will also be taking part in ‘Walk to School’ month.
