On the Friday of the first week back it was our annual Maths Day and the children had so much fun rotating around the 4 Year 2 classes to take part in different shape, money, time and fraction activities. At the end of the day, Year 2 took part in a Magic Maths Workshop. Also this half term the children have been developing their subtraction, addition, multiplication and division skills and also learnt about pictograms and block diagrams.

Our key text for this half term was ‘The Lonely Beast’ by Chris Judge. The children developed their reading skills of prediction and inference. Recreating scenes from the book helped the children to understand what the different characters might be feeling and thinking.

Year 2 have been on a tour of the United Kingdom and been learning the capital cities and surrounding seas of the four countries. We have made an information book which also includes facts about physical and human features of each country.

This half term the Year 2 children were treated to a special visit from Keren, who works with Insight in Kingston. She led lessons all about the symbols of Christianity and what they mean to Christians. The children first discussed what a symbol is and discussed famous symbols we all know, as well as symbols for other religions familiar to the children. The children were able to recall their learning from Easter and from Year 1 too! At the end of the session the children designed their own stained glass window using one of the symbols of Christianity as their focus piece.

In Science, the children have been learning about the main changes as young animals, including humans, grow into adults. The adults really loved seeing the children’s timelines which helped the children to think about what they have achieved so far in their lives and to think about important world events such as the pandemic and Brexit that have happened during their lifetime. Each class were fascinated watching the metamorphosis of the butterfly life cycle and the children were proud of themselves for taking a photo on the ipad and typing a post on Tapestry about it. Thank you parents for replying to your child’s post. They really enjoyed reading your comments and responding to you.

In PSHE, the children have been learning about families, keeping safe, friends and conflict, secrets, trust and appreciation. To support their learning this half term, 2 Police Officers visited the Year 2 children and reminded them how to stay safe online, how to identify a real police officer and the number to call if they need help in an emergency. The children learned that the police are people we can trust.

Our last week of term was full of fun and celebration as we took part in Around the Commonwealth Week as part of our whole school celebrations in the build up to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. All the children took part in a workshop from Earthsong, made a traditional dish, explored artwork and wrote a report about their country. Saturn class learnt about Sri Lanka, Venus class about Kenya, Mercury class about New Zealand and Jupiter class learnt about Australia. On the final day of term the children enjoyed dressing in red, white and blue to take part in our family Jubilee picnic. During the lead up to this event the children wrote invitations to their parents to invite them to the picnic and also wrote a letter to the Queen!

Thank you again to all our parents for all their support. It has been a busy term with SATs, celebrations and lots of learning! The children are enjoying reading the ‘parent voice’ comments in their books from our reading mornings and we look forward to inviting parents in for another ‘Celebration of Work’ morning in the next half term. We can not believe that next half term is our final one with our amazing Year 2 children! We hope all our families have a relaxing, sunny, happy holiday!
