Year 1 - 2nd half of Spring term

Year 1 - 2nd half of Spring term

It has been great to have everyone back in school.  We were so proud of all the hard work that the children did at home and the parents and carers did a great job supporting their children as we can see so much progress.  Well done for all your hard work.

We have had a busy half term back in school.  We continued to learn about pirates and all the children enjoyed becoming Blackbeard experts and learning about the famous pirate’s life.  We ended our topic by having pirate day.  It was lovely to see the children dressed up and having fun.  On pirate day the children had to design ships and make sure they floated.  The children were given a range of materials and constructed their boats in small groups.  The boats looked fantastic and floated brilliantly, but we were also impressed by their team working skills!

During lockdown we used famous artists' work to inspire us.  We continued to do this at school.  Here you can see the famous painting called The Great Wave by Hokusai.  The children recreated this painting by mixing paints and using different brushes.

The children have worked hard at developing their addition and subtraction skills.  We focused on developing mental strategies and it has been very rewarding seeing children become more confident in their arithmetic skills.  We used our adding skills to solve problems.  We learnt that sometimes, when you are solving a problem you have to try an idea, but if it does not work you can try to improve it.  This is a problem solving skill we will use in the future and will help us to solve problems more easily.
