Culture Bag

Culture Bag

Dear Parents/Carers,

One of the best things about Burlington Infant and Nursery School is the wide range of cultures represented in our children, parents and staff.  We are very proud of the way we celebrate different cultures from around the world through many of our subjects such as RE and Geography and also in the opportunities we offer in the wider curriculum, such as Around the World Week and Holiday Day.

This year we are celebrating all the different cultures we have in our school, so we will be distributing special ‘culture bags’ to each child over the course of the year. In the bag the children can collect images, objects, or artefacts that they feel represents an aspect of their culture. You can help your child by talking about the things in their bags, and helping them to remember some interesting facts about their culture. In class the children will share the contents of their bag, giving an insight into all the different cultures in our school.

There are a variety of different ways that a culture can be represented in the bag.  Here are some examples:

Pictures or examples of traditional food that the family enjoys eating.
Photos or objects that show a Family tradition.
Decorations, pictures or objects that help explain special occasions that are celebrated every year.
A toy or game that is a family favourite.
A recording of a song that the family enjoys singing.
A piece of material that represents an outfit that might be worn on a special occasion.
A photo or souvenir of a special place that you have visited e.g., a place of historical significance.
An example of a traditional craft or handmade object.
If sport is an important part of your culture, clothing, or a piece of equipment could be included in the bag.
An example of a word or a story book written in your language.
A picture of a famous person from your culture.
Or anything else that you feel represents your culture and you are comfortable sharing.

The bags will be handed out to different groups of children every half term and they will be given time to share the contents of their bag and discuss the meanings of the pictures/objects with their friends in the class.

We are very excited to learn more about our families and the cultures we have at Burlington. If you have any time to spare and would like to come in to join us when your child shares their culture with the class, please let us know. Come in and read a story or share a song in your language or anything else that you would be happy to share. We would love to have you!

If you have any questions please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Thank you and best wishes,
