March Update for Year 1

March Update for Year 1

We have had a very busy half term.  In our topic Pirates and Explorers, we have been developing our mapping skills.  First we made sure we knew that there were different features found on a map: human and physical features.   Then we went on a local walk to see the features in our local area.  When we got back we drew a map to show our route.

We had a great time walking around the local area and saw that there were lots of human features in New Malden but we did also see the physical features of a stream and a hill.

In Maths we looked at different ways we could measure.  We used standard and non-standard units to measure length and mass.  We were very proud of ourselves when we learnt how to use a ruler.

In RE we looked at the story of Easter.  The children learnt that Christians remember different parts of the Easter story and learnt what Lent is.  We talked about how we could be extra kind.  Here are some of our ideas.  We decorated our class tree with our promises.

In PSHE we have learnt that there are things we can do to help keep us healthy: drink water, eat fruit and vegetables, get exercise and have enough sleep.  We also thought about how there were things in our house which were safe and unsafe.  This helped us to understand how important it was to only use medicine when a trusted adult gave it to us and how the instructions had to be followed.

Finally, we had the excitement of Book Week.  We read the book Albert Talbot and did lots of fun activities linked to the book.  We were also able to get dressed into our pyjamas one day and come to school as a book character!  It was a lot of fun!
