Year 2 - 1st half of Summer term

Year 2 - 1st half of Summer term

Our key text for this half term was ‘The Lonely Beast’ by Chris Judge.

We wrote about his journey to the city using expanded noun phrases to describe the different physical features and used adverbs to describe how he moved, for example cautiously, nervously and happily.  Using clay, we made a new beast friend for The Lonely Beast.

Then as part of our Computing curriculum, the children captured an image of their creation using the ipad and uploaded it onto their Tapestry page.  They then typed a short caption to describe their character.

On the Friday of the first week back, it was our annual Maths Day.  The children took part in lots of different activities related to our theme of money, which included: word problems, pattern/picture creating, board games, and even creating their own money related board games!

Our story for the day was Charlotte’s Piggy Bank which was about a talking piggy bank that granted a child one wish.

We created our own piggy banks throughout the day.  Also this half term, we have been developing our subtraction, multiplication and division skills.

In Science we have been learning about the main changes as young animals, including humans, grow into adults.  We were very lucky to have caterpillars in our classrooms and watch them change into beautiful butterflies!

We have also been learning about the countries of the United Kingdom.  We now know the names of the capital cities of Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England, can recognise their flags and can name human and physical features of each of the countries.

During Around the World Week, which was the final week of term, the children took part in lots of fun activities, including cooking a traditional dish, a workshop by Earthsong Music and wearing clothing which represented a country of their choice, whilst learning about different cultures.  Jupiter found out all about Poland, Saturn discovered facts about Germany, Venus explored Japan and Mercury researched the Philippines.

It has been a busy half term with lots of fun and lots of learning!  Thank you for all your continued support.  We can not believe that next half term is our final one with our amazing Year 2 children.   We hope you all have a relaxing sunny happy holiday!
