Year 2 update on Autumn 2

Year 2 update on Autumn 2

It’s been a fierce fire burning, delicious bread making, scientific material testing, Lowry matchstick men drawing kind of half term!

We went back in time to 1666 to discover all about the Great Fire of London. We wrote diaries of our experiences, made bread as if we were Thomas Farriner in the bakery on Pudding Lane, set fire to our ‘box houses’ in the playground, watching the flames grow and spread from building to building then finally we made a real life bucket chain throwing water onto the fire!

Our skills in maths have quite literally ‘multiplied’! As we have developed our knowledge of addition and subtraction, we ventured into applying newly learnt methods within contexts such as money and mass. The children have really enjoyed exploring the progression of repeated addition into multiplication and have been busy challenging themselves to learn their times tables!

Science has been a journey of discovery building on the children’s knowledge of materials. We’ve looked at where materials come from, manmade vs natural, what makes certain materials more suitable for a purpose.... and helped Santa with his plans to deliver presents in a COVID safe way by investigating materials that would be suitable for to make a parachute to float presents down safely into the children’s homes.

Our computing topic focussed on staying safe online, recognising potential dangers online as well as cyber bullying and linked to PSHE where we explored celebrating diversity and differences, as well as how important it is to be kind to each other.

Other highlights this term have been learning about special celebrations and festivals such as Remembrance Day, Diwali, Hanukkah and leading up to the Christian’s celebration of Christmas with our Christmas Concert!

After Christmas, our topic is Florence Nightingale. You will receive the Spring 1 Newsletter soon which will let you know about all the fun learning your child will be taking part in.
